For the passes a straight needle fights you on. The hook enters and returns along a curve, for ear projects where entry and exit are not in line, and receiving-tube work that needs the tip steered.

A shaped needle is the clearest proof of who designed this line: nobody draws one unless they have stood there needing it.

KILA was designed in Italy by professional piercers — people who pierce for a living, and who had spent years working with needles designed by someone who never had.

That single fact explains everything else on this page. A factory optimises cost per unit. A piercer optimises the pass. The two lead to opposite decisions, and you can feel all three of them on the tray:

• A silicone membrane over the steel. Coating a needle costs money. It also stops the drag, keeps the channel clean and makes the hand-off to the jewellery smooth. A piercer decides that is worth paying for. A purchasing department decides it is not.
• Ethylene oxide, not gamma. EO sterilises at low temperature, so the bevel geometry and the coating come out exactly as they went in. Gamma is cheaper and harder on coatings. This is a choice made by someone who has felt the difference on the hundredth pass of the day.
• Lot and expiry on every wrapper. Not on the box — on each of the hundred needles inside it. Printing a label on one carton is easy. Printing it a hundred times is what a piercer asks for, because the piercer is the one standing in front of a health inspector holding a single needle.

Certification and documentation

KILA carries an EU Declaration of Conformity, issued in Italy under Directive 2001/95/EC on general product safety. Risk analysis was carried out by the HAZOP method (IEC 61882:2016) and residual risk calculated by LOPA (IEC 61511-1:2016). Twelve-month warranty against manufacturing defects.

Ask your current needle supplier for the same two documents. Most will not have them ready, and that tells you something.

Storage and handling

Store between 18-22 °C at 35-50% relative humidity, indoors, away from steam, direct sunlight and heat. Check the expiry before use, open the wrapper at the moment of the procedure, and never let the tip touch a non-sterile surface. Single use, always.
